The question for some of us is, why some people want to keep working decades beyond retirement age? CNN Opinion editor Stephanie Griffith asked seven people who are past the conventional retirement age why they are still at the job and got as many responses as there were respondents. They continue to work happily and productively, and were happy to explain to us how and why they do it. Over the years I’ve had to adapt frequently to the changing technology, which isn’t always easy for someone my age. So now, rather than staying up to date with current events, my patients are withdrawing as much as possible from the news. Withdrawing from political information or solicitations is an active stance as contrasted with the more common idea of disengagement or apathy, which is a passive stance. Their sense of purpose comes from maintaining an active stance of withdrawal as a silent protest against a system that feels broken and unfair. Having a sense of agency is better for mental health than acquiescence, but it can be tricky to find the line between being informed versus overwhelmed. However, developing a sense of purpose is a more effective antidote to despair than active withdrawal.

In psychological terms, waiting is often framed as a component of delayed gratification and is contrasted against instant gratification. It is the rare night I fall asleep before turning a few pages of a book. So, I was quite surprised to find myself immersed in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache novels, all 18 of them. Knowing that I would not run out of books, no matter how many sleepless nights I might be facing, calmed me. Returning to my Louise Penny mystery that night, I realized that perhaps it was the memory of those lonely nights from my childhood that kept me from reading mystery books. The women physicians who took care of me are a stunning reminder of how the world has changed since my childhood.
